At about 2:30 in the morning on Monday, February 16, 2026, a man called 911 from a brick ranch house on Cunningham Court in Tipp City, Ohio, a small town about 15 miles north of Dayton.

He could barely get the words out.

“Oh my God, somebody broke into my home,” he told the dispatcher. “Somebody broke into my home and shot my wife.”

“My wife, she’s got two shots to her head. There’s blood everywhere. Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God.”

The dispatcher asked whether she was breathing. “No, I don’t think so,” he said. Then, to her: “Ashley, Ashley, baby, baby please.”

He said the door leading to the garage was wide open. He did not know whether the intruder was still inside.

The caller was Caleb Flynn, 40. The woman in the bed was his wife of 15 years.

“I love my wife more than anything”

Thirteen years earlier, Caleb Flynn had stood in front of the cameras of American Idol.

He got a golden ticket to Hollywood on season 12 in 2013 and was cut early in the competition. But in his hometown interview he talked mostly about his wife, who he said had nudged him to audition.

“The thing that makes me unique, you know, I absolutely love the Lord,” he said. “I love my wife more than anything. She’s very, very pretty, just, woof, I love her.”

By 2026 he was a worship leader at the Christian Life Center church in Butler Township, near Dayton, and worked for his wife’s family business.

Ashley Flynn was 37, a week away from her 38th birthday. She grew up in Tipp City and graduated from Tippecanoe High School and Lee University, a Christian university in Tennessee. Caleb went there too. She had been an elementary school teacher, then a substitute teacher in the district and the coach of the seventh-grade girls volleyball team at Tippecanoe Middle School.

They had two young daughters.

The story on the bodycam

Tipp City police got there within minutes. Flynn waved down the first officer.

Body camera video, later released by the Tipp City Police Department, shows officers rushing into the house with their guns drawn and finding Flynn kneeling in the dining room. They went room by room.

“We have a lady with a gunshot wound to the head in her bed,” an officer said over the radio. “We got gun casings on the floor. The husband’s here and the kids are here.”

Ashley was lying in bed as if asleep. She had been shot twice in the back of the head. Two 9mm shell casings lay on the floor near the foot of the bed.

The girls had slept through it. “The girls don’t even know yet,” Flynn said on the video. “They’re sleeping.”

Between sobs, he told officers what had happened. He had a bad cough, he said, so Ashley had asked him to sleep on the couch. “I shouldn’t have listened,” he said. In the night he thought he heard the dogs’ collars and assumed one of the girls was up. He went into the girls’ room and lay down with them.

“I went in their room, and I laid down with them for, I don’t even know how long, and that’s when I heard it,” he said.

“When I finally got up, the door leading to the garage was open, but I didn’t see anybody.”

He also told the officers he kept guns in the house, and a handgun in the center console of his truck in the garage.

Flynn wept, covered his face, rocked back and forth and threw up. He called his mother. “Ashley’s dead. She’s dead,” he said. “Someone broke in.” When Ashley’s mother arrived, he collapsed on the porch, wailing, and an officer helped him up before the two of them held each other on the front lawn.

“I don’t know what to do, I don’t know what to do,” he said.

“I don’t know what to do either,” she answered through tears. “I’m just, I’m in shock.”

But the stranger had left no trace. About an hour after police arrived, a drone went up over the neighborhood and a police dog was brought in to track the intruder. The ground was wet, and the handler noticed that he and the dog were leaving prints. He found no other prints leading away from the house. The dog found no scent trail at all.

And inside the garage, officers were looking at the two things the intruder story depended on.

The center console of Flynn’s 2024 Ford pickup was open. The handgun he said he kept there was gone.

Then an officer looked at the side door, the door the killer had supposedly used to get in and out. It was open, just as Flynn had said.

Then he noticed what was standing in front of it.
